For as great as social media is, they train us to favor brevity instead of digging into the context of the information we consume. That can be a big problem.

Seek more than sound bites

Quotes, whether stated orally or through the written word, is powerful. However, for brevity’s sake, quotes give a quick summation, but they also allow the presenter to frame the narrative by selecting the quotes and not giving the context of the content.

Determine the validity and intention of the source

Far too often, ‘sources’ are inherently partial. ‘Sources’ tend to be biased. It is framed in a way that has a more positive outlook and speaks more on the successes rather than negative. You should always question the agenda of the source.

Spot trends and patterns

In an ideal world, we would seek the context behind every piece of content we consume. For example, before hiring a company, one should always do their research such as going through an average amount of reviews on LinkedIn and Glassdoor to get enough background on the company. Psychologically, knowledge of the company even at a macro level context satisfies us.
